History
Over one hundred years ago, the Reno area was used as a resting stop for weary travelers passing through. The area was originally called Lake ’s Crossing, but in May of 1868 it became the city of Reno in honor of General Jesse Lee Reno, who was a Union officer during the Civil War.
Climate
At an altitude of nearly 4,500 feet, Reno residents enjoy a climate with four distinct seasons and an abundance of sunshine. The average temperatures during the winter months are usually in the low 30s and the summer temperatures are usually in the high 80s. Because of the low humidity in the area, the temperatures do not feel as extreme.
Recreation
Reno is conveniently located just 45 minutes from scenic Lake Tahoe, which provides easy access to more than ten beautiful, world class ski resorts in the winter. During the summer the Tahoe area has other excellent outdoor activities such as hiking, boating and fishing. Many of these activities are also available right in Reno. The Truckee River flows through downtown and the Sierra Nevada mountain range is just to the west of town. Other recreational opportunities include horseback riding, cycling, rafting, rock climbing, and golfing. Most Reno real estate listings are in close proximity to these activities.
